Pulse: in memory (no food post today)
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the hate crime that claimed the lives of 49 innocent souls at Pulse nightclub in my stateside hometown of Orlando, Florida. This attack of terrorism claimed the life of a friend, the longtime roommate of my best friend... As such, June 12 is a day of mourning for me, for my city. The days that followed the attack were a surreal stretch of waiting, of confusion, of grief, of the unsettling realization that hatred can invade even this sleepy enclave of acceptance and love. The aftermath of this attack, however, revealed the resilience, deep kindness, and community that define my little city more than an act of violence ever could.
The lives of the victims are remembered in love; yet, to me, it does not feel right to publish recipes for low-glycemic juices, or similar such content, on this day. So, for the usual food content, please check back on Thursday. Today, I remember you, Dru, in deepest gratitude, for the love, positivity, and adventure that you brought into the life of my best friend and so many others that you touched. Thank you.
If you feel called to support the memory of the Pulse victims, I encourage you to Honor Them With Action by supporting this campaign to end anti-LGBTQ bias and bigotry.
With love,
Elizabeth
